A special day, school is closed and the village community gathers to celebrate the Wazungu (white people) coming to town. The atmosphere is electric, excited chattering anticipating the coming events as dust clouds rise under dancing feet and the sound of ngoma drummers slowly emanates from the surrounding maize fields. Exclusively played by women these hourglass shaped instruments, carried under their arms or played between the legs are called Muheme drums. Each player contributes a unique pattern and together they create an amazing interlocking rhythm. The name of the drum group Chekanao means "laugh with them".
