about

One of our hopes was to find some of the more unusual instruments used by the Wagogo people. During an afternoon of mingling with some of the more elderly women of the village we showed them some pictures of instruments that we were interested in finding. One of the ladies recognised this musical bow and explained that a player lived just around the corner! Over an hour later after a very long walk we came into the small compound of a family singing and playing. The elderly man had been taught the Donondo by his father but unfortunately was now the last surviving player in his village.

This song is an encouragement against fear of male circumcision which still has cultural significance amongst some of the Wagogo families.

lyrics

Dear boy be quiet,
this is our culture
soon you'll conquer.
